Message from the Director

In July of 1991, the Pediatric Oncology Program was established at Stony Brook University Medical Center to expand the clinical services available to the children of Suffolk County, and to expand the cancer research activities already present at Stony Brook.

A New Decade of Hope

Our patient heroes are featured throughout the film, which showcases the services of Stony Brook University Medical Center's Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Program. Supplemental services that were implemented to answer a need or improve the quality of life for the pediatric patient are explained in detail. These programs are supported by the Sunrise Fund, launched in 1999, as a grassroots effort by parents determined to improve childhood cancer survival. This wide range of support includes a School Re-Entry Program, which assists in the child's return to school; a "Rising Stars" Talent Show and Art Exhibit; Play Fit-Stay Fit!, a comprehensive wellness program; Our Little Heroes, a parent support network; the Daniel Brooks Memorial Educational Award for Students with Cancer; Play It Forward, a social support program by student-athletes; and a "Living in Love" Palliative Care and Bereavement Group.
