Childhood Cancer Facts in the United States
  • More than 9,510 children under the age of 15 are diagnosed with cancer each year.
  • More than 1,500 die from the disease.
  • Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children ages 1 to14.
  • The cause of most childhood cancers is unknown and can not be prevented.
  • 5 year survival rates for childhood cancer have improved to over 77%.
  • There are over 270,000 childhood cancer survivors in the U.S.
  • It is not uncommon for childhood cancer survivors to experience late effects of treatment.
  • Cancer rates for children increase by approximately 1 percent each year.
  • There are 65 to 70 new cases of childhood cancer diagnosed each year in Suffolk County.
  • Over 60% of the children in Suffolk County diagonsed with cancer each year receieved their treatment at the Stony Brook University Cancer Center.
  • Since the Pediatric Cancer Program opened in 1991 more than 600 children have been treated at Stony Brook University Medical Center.
  • September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
