| JOHN R. COLON
John joined us five
years ago as the Assistant to the Dean of the School of Social Welfare. He has developed a successful collaborative
outreach component with various community-based organizations and a working relationship with two major labor unions that represent social
services and healthcare workers, in the New York City region. He has earned the respect of the federal and local elected officials from
these districts. This alliance will enable the School of Social Welfare and its faculty to deliver professional services in an array
of areas identified through community-based organizations. It will also encourage labor unions to empower their employees and members
to improve their community through continuing education.
John has also been instrumental in developing a direct academic communication network with the decision-makers from the offices of the Academic
Advising and Transfer Services at all the City University of New York’s Community Colleges. The School of Social Welfare’s undergraduate/upper-division,
BSW program has become a highly sought after academic program for undergraduate students interested in the profession of Social Work in the New York
City region.
Additionally, John has been a guest lecturer for the following courses in the Stony Brook Center in Manhattan: Overview of Substance Abuse; Culturally
Competent Social Work Practice; Anger Management; and Cultural Diversity and Leadership. Currently, he is teaching and undergraduate course
in the Global Studies Department in the Health Sciences Center, Long Island Campus.
