Dr. Singh has provided a notable and
extraordinarily complete atlas of the histopathology of human breast
disease. Migrating through the categories is almost effortless, and
shifting among them is straightforward. I am particularly enthused about
the presentation of some specific areas that can be problematic in
over-diagnosis of in situ cancers. Specifically, the many
photomicrographs of atypical lobular hyperplasia and atypical ductal
hyperplasia will guide pathologists to the proper diagnostic posture of
avoiding over-diagnosis of carcinoma in situ. Another specific example
of usefulness is the image of
radiation changes in normal breast tissue – a frequent source of
confusion in biopsies of breasts previously exposed to chemotherapy
and/or radiation therapy.
In summary, the ease of access and
completeness of this effort should make it educational and be a practical
guide in the modern and complex management of breast disease.
