Dental Students Learning

Introduction
The Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine selects highly qualified students who are representative of a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and interests. Selection is based on an overall appraisal of the applicant's suitability for a career in dentistry.

Applicants should demonstrate academic achievement, competence in the sciences and a general interest in the profession of dentistry. These factors, as well as performance on the DAT, letters of recommendation and the personal interview, are considered in the admissions process. Consistent with the school policy of selecting students with varied backgrounds, the school encourages applications from qualified individuals from those groups who have in the past been underrepresented in the dental profession. Due to the small class size, students attending the school are educated in a highly supportive environment. Academic tutoring, faculty counseling, and individually developed remedial programs are available to students under special circumstances, as determined by faculty.

Requirements
Applicants are required to have completed three years of college before matriculation.

Although not a requirement, it is highly desirable that applicants possess a baccalaureate degree.

Information regarding Community College Work: Maximum of 60 semester hours, preferably earned prior to the third year of study toward a baccalaureate degree.

The undergraduate program of study must include:
One year of the following introductory courses (including laboratories):

Bulleted Item Inorganic (General) Chemistry
Bulleted Item Organic Chemistry
Bulleted Item General Physics
Bulleted Item General Biology

One year of: Mathematics (with at least one semester of Calculus or Statistics)

The American Dental Admissions Test (DAT) is mandatory, preferably taken within three years of the date of application, with scores of 15 or greater preferred.

A Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater is preferred.

Suggested Additional Preparation:
Success in dental school is highly correlated with a student’s competence in science. Applicants should gain familiarity with the fundamentals of the natural and social sciences that are relevant to the delivery of health care. Virtually all candidates accepted into dental school possess a baccalaureate degree in the arts and sciences. Although preference for admission is not based on a particular field of academic concentration, all candidates are required to demonstrate competence in biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics and mathematics. It is strongly suggested that applicants also take courses in upper level sciences such as biochemistry and physiology as well as in the social sciences and English composition.
