Quick Facts - March 2008
Quick Facts are short descriptions of key construction projects underway throughout the hospital. By circulating these messages, we hope to provide the community and internal staff with a better understanding of the Major Modernization Project and the improvements being made to our facilities. We ask for your continued patience throughout the transformation.
The Emergency Department
- In the Emergency Department, treatment bays, critical care and resuscitation rooms (along with support space including triage and waiting), have been constructed and painted.
- Outlets for gas and electric have been installed.
- Ceiling installation is ongoing.
- A new escalator has been introduced to allow patients and staff access to and from the main hospital lobby, Level 5 to Level 4.
Operating Room (OR)
- Each of the ten (10) newly constructed Operating Rooms have been framed with metal studding. The OR will be further defined with sheetrock, floors and ceilings in the coming months.
- The rooms have been set up with two large ceiling-mounted surgical booms (see photo).
- These booms will deliver medical gases, illumination, video images, equipment and services while reducing clutter and maximizing space within the suite.
- Patients and family members will be able to access the surgical intake area directly from a set of doors located at the front of the hospital on Level 4.
- A new vehicular drop off area has been paved for improved access to both the surgical intake and the ED.
Women and Infants'
- The new patient rooms, all private, have been constructed and painted (each room has a painted accent wall, in a soft earth color).
- The accent wall contains a decorative, concealed headwall (headwalls typically store nurse call, electric and gas outlets) allowing for function and beauty. (The photo shows the concealed headwall. The artistic cover has not yet been placed due to construction).
- The private bathrooms and shower facilities have been tiled. Lighting and bath fixtures have been set.
- There are 12 postpartum and 12 antepartum rooms with a holding nursery located on Level 5.
- Level 6 houses additional postpartum beds and the main nursery.
The Lobby

- The lobby has been designed with a conference room, gift shop, Starbucks café and plenty of seating.
- Configured for easy access, the information desk will be located immediately as you enter the main hospital doors.
- The angles and design of the space are welcoming and will work to enhance way-finding.
- Construction is focused on covering the steel which provides structure and shape with a more aesthetic look and feel.
- Work is underway for the ceiling installation (see photo).
- Phase I of the Major Modernization Project is anticipated to be completed by the fall of 2008.
During construction, we are making every effort to minimize disruption and inconvenience to patients and visitors. If you have any questions, please call the Project Office at 631.444-4000.
