Alan Freedman joined the Stony Brook University Athletic Training Program in January 2011 as a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Clinical Coordinator. He is responsible for teaching didactic courses and coordinating all aspects of student clinical experience. Freedman also serves as the Clinical Instructor Educator (CIE) for the program. As the CIE, he is responsible for training all program Approved Clinical Instructors (ACIs) who supervise students at their clinical experience. Freedman received his Master of Education with a specialization in Athletic Training from the University of Virginia in 1991. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in education with a concentration in Sports Medicine from Appalachian State University in 1990. Prior to arriving at Stony Brook, Freedman served as the Clinical Coordinator in the Athletic Training Education Program in the CAATE-approved ATEP at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Freedman became a Board of Certification Certified Athletic Trainer in 1990. He has held membership in the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association, the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society, where he served as its newsletter co-editor, and the Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association, where he served as treasurer. Freedman is a member of the International Ombudsman Association and has served on the Exam Administration Committee for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification. Freedman is an approved instructor for First Aid/CPR/AED for the American Red Cross. His research interests include clinical education, attitudes and beliefs toward evidence based practice, and neuromuscular performance characteristics of the hip.
While at Virginia, Freedman was the graduate assistant athletic trainer for football (1991 Sugar Bowl participant) and women’s lacrosse (1991 NCAA National Champions). After UVA, he was appointed the director of Athletic Training Outreach Services at University Sports Medicine in Rochester, New York. While in Rochester, Freedman served as the head athletic trainer for the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League. The Knighthawks won the Indoor Lacrosse World Championship in 1997.
Alan and his wife Beth, also a Certified Athletic Trainer, are the proud parents of a 8 year old daughter and 6 year old son.
