The clinical education component of the ATP allows students to learn through experience. Major emphasis is placed on the development of psychomotor skills in addition to cognitive knowledge. All students are required to fulfill their clinical education requirements under the direct supervision of an approved clinical instructor (ACI). Students are assessed by their ACI on competencies and proficiencies established by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Education Council. Students may be placed in a variety of settings including: college/university, high schools, outpatient rehabilitation clinics, and physician’s offices. Types of clinical experiences consist of equipment intensive, general medical intensive, sport intensive, and rehabilitation intensive as recommended by the CAATE. Patient populations consist of athletes and physically active individuals from both genders as recommended by the CAATE.
