Dr. Firestone received her baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology from the University of Florida and shortly thereafter began working as a medical technologist in the transfusion service at Crawford W. Long Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. After moving to New York, she was employed in the transfusion service at The Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan before accepting a faculty position in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Department at Stony Brook University. She received a Master of Arts in Biological Sciences from Stony Brook University in 1985 and a Doctorate of Education from St. John’s University in 2007.
Dr. Firestone has over twenty-five years of academic experience in the School of Health Technology and Management where she has served in teaching and administrative capacities. She is currently the Associate Dean of the School of Health Technology and Management and prior to this served as the chair of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Department. She has been an invited speaker at local and national conferences and has presented workshops for laboratory professionals on a variety of topics. She has served as chair of the American Society of Clinical Pathology’s Joint Generalist Examination Committee, has published in professional journals and has contributed chapters to several texts in the field. Dr. Firestone is an active member of many SHTM and University committees.
Prof. Firestone serves on the Board of Directors of the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, Inc., an organization that provides guide dogs free of charge to blind people who seek enhanced mobility and independence. She has provided a home for five puppies until the dogs were old enough to return to the Foundation to begin training for their new career.
