Research & Scholary Activities


Professor Mary Hotaling, MS, MT (ASCP) DLM, has over 20 years of experience as a clinical laboratory professional with more than half of this time working in laboratory administration. Professor Hotaling earned her M.S. degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences at St. John’s University, NY. She is a registered medical technologist, and has earned a specialist certification with diplomate status in laboratory management.

Prior to coming to Stony Brook University, Professor Hotaling was a laboratory administrative director for a large multi-site health care facility in New York City. For the past ten years, as a full-time clinical assistant professor for the Stony Brook University, Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, she has been teaching courses in clinical biochemistry. Professor Hotaling also serves as laboratory safety officer at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, West Islip, NY.

Professor Hotaling is an invited speaker for national clinical laboratory professional organizations including the Clinical Laboratory Management Association (CLMA) and the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). She serves on the CLMA of Greater New York Chapter Board of Directors. She is also a consultant specializing in health care management and regulatory matters.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Professor Hotaling is the Chair of the Business Advisory Council for the Laboratory Assistant Training Program offered by Abilities, Inc., at the National Center for Disability Services, Brookhaven National Laboratory, where she mentors students on a one-to-one basis, assisting them to enter the laboratory field. She continues to be an active volunteer for Habitat for Humanities of Suffolk, helping to build houses so that low income working families may have an opportunity for home ownership.
