Dr. Ronald Malowitz received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biology at Long Island University, Brooklyn, NY. In 1980, he earned his Ph.D. in Biology at St. John’s University, Queens, NY. He is a certified medical technologist as defined by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

Dr. Malowitz has extensive experience in the field of clinical microbiology. Prior to coming to Stony Brook University, Dr. Malowitz was a staff microbiologist, and later a supervisor in the department of microbiology, at Queens Hospital Center in Queens, NY. After earning his Ph.D., Dr. Malowitz became the Director of Microbiology at the Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, NJ. He was also an adjunct professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, NJ. Dr. Malowitz came to Stony Brook University in 1984 as Assistant Professor in Allied Health and Assistant Head of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at Stony Brook University Hospital. Several years later, he was appointed as Clinical Associate Professor.

Dr. Malowitz is responsible for teaching courses in clinical microbiology and its sub-divisions of bacteriology, parasitology, and mycology. He serves on several school committees including admissions and curriculum. In his position as Assistant Head of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, he is primarily involved with the parasitology and mycology sections. He lectures on parasitology to the fourth year medical students, and he is called upon to give lectures on mycology to the dermatology residents. Dr. Malowitz has authored several articles published in peer reviewed journals. He has served as an associate editor and authored several chapters in the textbook, “Saunder’s Manual of Clinical Laboratory Sciences,” edited by Craig A. Lehmann, 1999.

Dr. Malowitz enjoys being with and helping his three daughters during his free time. He enjoys both classical and popular music, and he likes to read, garden, and swim.
