Jack Fuhrer, M.D.
Dr. Fuhrer is an Associate Dean of the School of Medicine
at Stony Brook University and the Clinical Director of the
AIDS Treatment Center for University Hospital and Medical
Center at Stony Brook. Dr. Fuhrer has been the Co-Investigator
in numerous NIH AIDS Clinical Trial Group studies and Principal
Investigator on many multi-center placebo controlled studies.
Dr. Fuhrer is widely published and is the co-author of multiple
articles and book chapters.
Sharon Nachman, M.D.
Dr. Nachman is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics for the
Department of Pediatrics at Stony Brook University and Chief
of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony
Brook. Dr. Nachman was a visiting professor with Wyeth-Lederle
Pharmaceutical Company in their Vaccine Division. Dr. Nachman
is currently the Principal Investigator for Pediatric ACTG.
Dr. Nachman is widely published in the field of pediatric
HIV and complications of HIV in children.
Lisa Chirch, M.D.
Dr. Chirch is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine, Dept. of Medicine, Stony Brook Medical Center. She is an attending physician at the David E. Rogers, M.D. Center for HIV/AIDS Care in Southampton, NY. Dr. Chirch has received several academic and professional honors and has published in the field of infectious diseases.
Ilvan Arroyo, M.A.; Associate Director
Mr. Arroyo first began working in the field of HIV/AIDS in 1991. He has held various positions including education and training for health professionals; supervising HIV/AIDS case management programs and directing a day treatment program for people living with HIV. Mr. Arroyo is a member of the Long Island HIV Care Network and has held various chair positions over the tenure of his career. He has a Bachelor in Science in Bilingual Special Education and a Master of Arts of Health Systems Management and Policy.
Sabina Steiner, M.S.N., M.P.H.; Project Administrative Officer
Ms. Steiner has worked at Stony Brook University for more than 20 years and over 16 years at the Center for Public Health Education. A trained clinical nurse specialist Ms. Steiner has vast experience working in the field of public health. She has also co-authored two publications in Investigative Ophthalmology Visual Science, examining the classification of age-related macular degeneration. Ms. Steiner has a Master in Science in Nursing and a Master of Public Health.
Debra A. Brown, J.D.; Senior Education Specialist:
Ms. Brown has worked in the HIV/AIDS field for the past 18 years in various positions, including education and training for health professionals; supervising HIV/AIDS case management and independent living housing programs; and working for the NYS Department of Health’s AIDS Epidemiology Unit. She has also co-authored a research study examining the relationship of AIDS knowledge vs. risk factors for incarcerated women, which was published in the Journal of Sociology and Social Research. Ms. Brown has a Bachelor in Social Work and a Doctorate in Jurisprudence.
Jinny Ferro, B.S.; Education Specialist:
A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Towson University, Ms. Ferro brings a strong background in HIV/AIDS education to the Center. She has educated the Long Island and the Towson, Maryland community on a whole host of public health and HIV/AIDS issues. Ms. Ferro has a Bachelor of Science in Health Education.
CPHE Staff
The CPHE enjoys a diverse staff that have over fifty years
of combined experience in the field of HIV/AIDS. The staff
is skilled at developing and tailoring curricula to meet the
needs of HIV providers. They have expertise in writing curricula and developing
Power Point presentations. Topic areas include: Barriers/Obstacles
to Adherence; Domestic Violence as a Barrier to Care and Treatment;
Psycho-Social Issues Affecting HIV+ Women; “Rapid Testing”
Counseling and Testing Issues; HIV Confidentiality Legislation;
Staged-Based Behavior Counseling and Utilizing The Transtheoretical
Model (TTM) of Behavior Change to assist providers with adherence
and prevention concerns.
