Program Goals

In order to achieve the mission of the Cytotechnology program, the following program goals and learning domains have been developed:

  1. To prepare competent entry level cytotechnologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.
    1. To prepare entry level cytotechnologists for the screening of gynecologic, non gynecologic, and fine needle aspiration material for the detection of infectious, benign, premalignant, and malignant processes.
    2. To ensure that the students are able to meet the needs of the profession by being able to screen at the expected rate for an entry level cytotechnologist, and to be accurate in his or her diagnoses.
    3. To prepare students to be able to perform basic laboratory procedures with accuracy and precision.
    4. To ensure that students are educated in current regulatory issues involved in the daily operation of a cytology laboratory.
    5. To ensure that graduates of the program are knowledgeable of their role as a part of a team in the delivery of health care.
  2. To assure that the coursework offered evolves as changes within the profession occur.
    1. To ensure that faculty and students are able to identify sources of information from journals and professional organizations in order to keep current with the evolving profession.
  3. To ensure that students are provided with exposure to various work environments and current technology during their education.
    1. To provide students with the opportunity to be exposed to various technology in order to gain entry level knowledge about its usage.
    2. To train students in the screening of both conventional and liquid based preparation slides, cell block slides, and a variety of staining techniques.
