Health Care Quality Management
- all courses have a management basis and provide skills needed for Health Care Quality Management
- intended for health care practitioners who require management training; courses will focus on the important field of quality improvement
- intended for managers who require specific management training in the health care field as it relates to quality
- five out of the six required courses will be offered online
- one course (HAS 533 Communications and Group Dynamics) which is not offered online will be offered as a hybrid course (combination of on campus and on line)

Important Message BEFORE Registering
All courses are 3 credits
You must complete 18 credits
Students must take a minimum of four Health Care Management courses (12 credits). Students may take two generic management courses through The College of Business (courses must be approved by HCPM). Students who are matriculated in the SHTM Physician Assistant post-professional masters program at the same time as they are matriculated in the AC HCM program may take and count HAP 505 toward the Advanced Certificate in Health Care Management (AC in HCM). If HAP 505 is counted toward the AC in HCM, only one generic management course through The College of Business may also be counted toward the AC in HCM. Students must meet with their advisor prior to selecting courses. All coursework must be taken at Stony Brook. Advanced Certificate students may not transfer credits from another university.
For a student who is matriculated in the Advanced Certificate or who has completed the Advanced Certificate HCM, no more than 18 credits may be applied to the Master of Science in Health Care Policy and Management.

Continuing on to a Master’s Degree
Students in the Advanced Certificate program are encouraged to continue with a master’s degree program. Those interested in health care should apply to the MS in Health Care Policy and Management (HCPM) program. Admission to the MS in HCPM program also requires the student have at least one year of full-time work experience in the health care industry; the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is also required for admission. Students must have appropriate professional status (if applicable), i.e.: licensed, certified or registered. Courses successfully completed during the certificate program may be directly applied to the Master of Science in Health Care Policy and Management degree.
However, for a student who is matriculated in the AC in HCM or who has completed the AC in HCM, no more than 18 credits may be applied to the Master of Science in Health Care Policy and Management. Students who want a more general management education should apply to the MBA degree program in the College of Business (formerly Harriman School). Admission to the MBA degree program requires an overall grade point average of at least 3.0; the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) is also required for admission. Students must apply to the specific master’s degree program they wish to pursue.
