Question #1: When is the deadline for applying?
Answer: To be considered as a matriculated student for the fall, you must apply by February 15. By February 15, you must have completed and submitted your application. For the Master’s, you must have taken the GRE’s by February 15.
Question #2: I missed the deadline for applying. Can I still take classes?
Answer: Yes, you can apply as a non-matriculated student. You are permitted to take 12 total credits as a non-matric; no more than 6 credits per semester. You must apply to the Advanced Certificate or the Master’s program by the following February 15.
Question #3: Do I need to complete any health forms?
Answer: Yes, you need to complete a student health form and a meningitis form. If you do not complete these forms, you will have a block placed on your account and you will not be able to register. Once you are accepted, a student conduct code must also be completed.
Question #4: Can I use the same application for the Master’s and the Advanced Certificate?
Answer: You must apply separately to each program. The Master’s application is different from the Advanced Certificate.
Question #5: What degree do I receive?
Answer: Yes, for the MS program; once you successfully complete your course requirements, you will be granted a Master of Science degree – MS in Health Care Policy and Management. The Advanced Certificate does not grant a degree.
Question #6: What areas of study do you offer?
Answer: Once accepted into the Master’s program, you can choose one of the following concentrations: health care management (which also offers a sub-specialty in sales and marketing in the clinical laboratory environment), gerontology, health policy or nutrition.
Question #7: Do you offer a master’s in nutrition?
Answer: No, we do not have a master’s in nutrition. We do have a Master’s in Health Care Policy and Management wherein you can take nutrition courses. (The nutrition concentration is only recommended for those students who have a nutrition/dietetic background.)
Question #8: What is the Dietetic Internship?
Answer: The Internship is for applicants who have a bachelor’s degree in nutrition/dietetics or who have completed the required didactic coursework. The internship is full-time (with a part-time option available every two years); students are also required to take three graduate classes. An internship is required for anyone who wishes to become a registered dietitian.
Question #9: What type of job can I get when I finish this master’s?
Answer: Our students have very vast backgrounds. For some, the master’s will allow them to move ahead in their field; for other students, their degree opens new doors. We have doctors, nurses, billing specialists, health educators, PTs, OTs, and marketing personnel among our graduates. You can utilize your master’s to strengthen your job position; to make you more effective as a manager. Advisors are available to discuss career goals with you.
Question #10: When are classes?
Answer: During the spring and fall semesters, classes meet once a week for 15 weeks, from 5 pm – 8 pm; during summer sessions, classes meet twice a week for approximately 6 weeks; 5 pm – 8:40 pm.
Question #11: Where are classes held?
Answer: Most classes are held on Level 2 of the Health Sciences Center (HSC). HSC is located on the same side of campus as Stony Brook Hospital. Occasionally a class may be held off site.
Question #12: Do you offer scholarships or stipends?
Answer: We do not offer any stipends or scholarships.
Question #13: Do I need work experience before applying?
Answer: Yes. All applicants must have one year of work experience in the health industry. The only exception is applicants who apply to our full-time dietetic internship.
Question #14: Must I take the GREs?
Answer: GREs are required for the Master’s program. You must take them before the February 15 deadline. GREs taken within the last five year are accepted; test scores older than fives years cannot be considered. GREs are waived if you hold a graduate degree from an accredited American university.
Question #15: Do you offer any courses on Stony Brook’s Manhattan campus?
Answer: At the present time, we do not offer courses in Manhattan. All coursework is completed at Stony Brook’s Long Island campus or on line.
Question #16: Can I meet with an advisor?
Answer: Yes. Once a month (except in February) we offer information sessions where you can learn about our program and discuss your goals with an advisor from Health Care Policy and Management.
Question #17: How much time do I have to complete my degree?
Answer: You have three years to complete the Advanced Certificate degree and five years to complete your Master’s.
Question #18: Can I transfer credits?
Answer: For students in the MS program only, you may, with our department’s approval, transfer up to six graduate credits from an accredited American university; courses would need to be evaluated by the department. Courses must have been taken within the last five years. Evaluation of courses would not be done until you have been accepted (matriculated) into our MS program. Students in the Advanced Certificate program may not transfer credits.
Question #19: Must I do an internship with the Master’s?
Answer: Most students choose to complete a practicum during their last semester. Internships are available on a limited basis. Students must have departmental approval.
Question #20: I have a degree from a foreign university. Will my foreign degree be accepted?
Answer: All foreign transcripts must be evaluated to make sure they are equivalent to an American degree. Students should contact Word Education Services (http://www.wes.org) to request a transcript evaluation. The evaluation must be a course-by-course evaluation AND it must show a GPA (grade point average). Original transcripts from foreign universities must be submitted to World Education Services AND to Stony Brook.
Question #21: Do I need to submit transcripts?
Answer: Yes, you need to submit official transcripts from any and every college you ever attend. The only exception is if you received a degree from Stony Brook, we will download a copy of your transcript for you. If you transferred to Stony brook, you must submit official transcripts from any previous college(s).
Question #22: I am not a U.S. citizen. Can I still apply?
Answer: Yes, you can apply to the Master’s or Advanced Certificate programs. You cannot apply as a non-matriculated student unless you hold certain type of visa status. Contact Office of Student Services for additional information (631-444-2111).
Question #23: Do you offer on-line courses?
Answer: Yes, we have several on-line courses. During summer sessions one and two, we try to offer a wide selection of on-line course to accommodate our working students. We may also offer on-line course during winter session.
Question #24: Do I need a computer to take on-line courses?
Answer: If you do not own a computer, you must have daily access to one. Students are responsible for participating in class several times a week via the computer.
Question #25: Is housing available?
Answer: If you are a full-time graduate student, you may be eligible for on-campus housing.
Question #26: How much does the program cost?
Answer: For New York State residents, the tuition is $288 per credit; out-of-state residents, the tuition is $455 per credit. In addition, there will be miscellaneous fees each semester. (Fees subject to change.)
