Research & Scholary Activities


Dr. Horowitz received her BA from Stony Brook University in 1971, her MS in Occupational Therapy from Columbia University and her PhD from the Graduate School of Social Service of Fordham University, with a concentration in Gerontology. She is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), has Board Certification in Gerontology from AOTA, and is a licensed social worker. Dr. Horowitz  has extensive clinical experience in geriatric rehabilitation across the continuum of care, home health care, long term care, and family-centered practice for older adults, including individuals with dementia. Additional areas of expertise and interest include interdisciplinary geriatric and gerontology education, geriatric care management, and service learning pedagogies that link education, practice and research.

Professional and research activities include exploration of the influence of social, instrumental and leisure activities on life satisfaction, particularly among residents of assisted living residences, interdisciplinary approaches to support caregivers of older adults with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, and workforce issues related to aging services. Dr. Horowitz is a core faculty member with Stony Brook University’s Long Island Geriatric Education Center, and serves on the University Senate Executive Committee as Vice President representing the Health Science Center. She is a member of the New York State Occupational Therapy Association, the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), World Federation of Occupational Therapists, Gerontological Society of America, and is a past president of the State Society on Aging of New York, an interdisciplinary society that addressing the needs of older New Yorkers and families.

Dr. Horowitz teaches Occupational Therapy and Clinical Medical Conditions, Gerontology, Patient Education, and Community, Occupation, and Health, mentors occupational therapy student research, Aging and Disability within The School of Health Technology and Management’s Bachelor’s in Health Science Program, and in the Long Island Geriatric Education Center.

Areas of academic interest include geriatric rehabilitation, dementia care, partnerships that promote aging in place, interdisciplinary gerontology education, and service learning and occupational therapy education. Dr. Horowitz’s research and writing have been published in AOTA’s OT Practice, AOTA’s Gerontology Special Interest Section Quarterly, Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy in Health Care, World Federation of Occupational Therapy Bulletin, Occupational Therapy in Mental Health, Occupational Therapy in Health Care, Physical and Occupational Therapy in Geriatrics, the Journal of Allied Health, Care Management Journals, and The Israel Journal of Occupational Therapy, and she has been a contributor to texts on  occupational therapy geriatric practice.
