Professor Alexander Lopez received his Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from Kean University of New Jersey (formally Kean College) in 1997. Alex received a doctoral degree in jurisprudence from New England School of Law. His clinical expertise is in burn care and rehabilitation, environmental modification, and administration and management. While practicing burn rehabilitation in Boston, he received media attention for his work in pediatric burns.
His primary academic responsibilities are in coordinating and teaching courses in physical disabilities, occupational therapy theory, and professional development. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he maintains an active practice in adult care. His professional interests include environmental modifications, driver rehabilitation, service learning, and burn rehabilitation. Alex is currently serving as an institutional board member and chair of the environmental modification committee for the Long Island Affiliate of Rebuilding Together®. Alex is a member of the Metropolitan Occupational Therapy Clinical Council. He is currently working with the American Occupational Therapy Association as a Judicial Committee member in identifying legal issues related to older drivers. Alex coordinates and mentors students in service-related activities in collaboration with Rebuilding Together®.
Alex has presented research in national conferences on burn rehabilitation. Alex was invited to present at seminars and workshops in the areas of healthcare law. His current research is in legal issues related to older drivers, professional development and environmental modification.
Alex became a full-time member of the Occupational Therapy Program faculty in January 2006. He also serves as the Academic Clinical Coordinator for Level I Fieldwork. Prior to joining the Stony Brook faculty, he was employed as an assistant professor at New York Institute of Technology.
