After graduating from the Touro
College PA Program in 1980, Professor Jeanne Cavalieri secured her first job
in orthopedics. Shortly thereafter she was appointed as the senior PA in Emergency
Medicine at Queens Hospital Center. Her clinical and administrative skills
were noticed by others and in 1994 Jeanne accepted the position of supervising
PA in Emergency Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC). During
her tenure at LIJMC she expanded the role of PAs in the department and was
active in teaching both PA students and emergency medicine residents. She
was instrumental in implementing progressive, patient-centered policies and
procedures and gained experience as a research coordinator. Jeanne is also
certified in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
Professor Cavalieri joined the faculty of the Stony Brook PA program in
2001 and earned her master’s degree with a concentration in Emergency
Medicine from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2002.
As the program’s Director of Clinical Education, Jeanne is responsible
for the coordination of all clinical year activities and emergency medicine
clerkships. She teaches in, and is responsible for, several units of clinical
medicine (including Infectious Disease and POMR-Physical Units) and is the
primary instructor for Diagnostic Imaging and our clinical skills labs.
Jeanne maintains her clinical skills working in the emergency department
at LIJ (where junior students often accompany her) and Health Services at
the Merchant Marine Academy.
Professor Cavalieri was the recipient of the 2003 New Faculty Award from
the Association of Physician Assistant Programs (APAP) and has earned numerous
teaching awards from the resident staff in emergency medicine at LIJMC.
Jeanne was awarded first place in the AAPA Publishing awards in 2001 for
her article “Responding Rapidly to Occupational Blood and Body-Fluid
Exposures” published in JAAPA. She serves on several committees in
the SHTM and is a member of the APAP Nominating and Awards Committee.
During her free time Jeanne enjoys teaching Sunday school to three year
olds, exercising, reading (for pleasure!!) and shopping with her teenage
daughter.
