Research & Scholary Activities

Professor Kuemmel received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1978 as part of its second graduating PA class (he remains an avid Badger and Packer fan). He came to New York shortly thereafter and completed the Postgraduate Residency in Surgery for PAs at the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1980. He was a member of Montefiore’s Renal Transplant Team until 1983, when he took a similar position at SB University Hospital.

Peter became a full-time member of the PA Program faculty in 1984, serving as the Clinical Coordinator for ten years. As part of efforts to enhance the Geriatrics curriculum, he completed a mini-fellowship in Geriatric Education for Physician Assistant Faculty, at Stanford University in 1986. Professor Kuemmel was named as the department’s Vice Chair in 1987. He completed his MS in Health Sciences (Education Track) at SUNY-Stony Brook in 1994.

Professor Kuemmel has primary responsibility for the Geriatrics and Surgical units in Clinical Medicine, the Research Design/EBM course, and the Geriatrics Clerkships, and serves as the Masters Project coordinator across both years of the curriculum. He is Chair of the SHTM Educational Technology Committee, and has served as a member of the New York State Department of Health’s Board for Professional Medical Conduct, and as Newsletter Editor for the NY State Society of Physician Assistants (NYSSPA). He received NYSSPA’s inaugural PA Educator of the Year award in 1995, and speaks on a regular basis at local, regional, and national PA conferences on a variety of medical and professional topics.  Peter is the 2011-2012 President of the New York State Society of Physician Assistants.

Professor Kuemmel also serves as Associate Director of the Long Island Geriatric Education Center (LIGEC). LIGEC is a federally-funded project which provides education to the faculty and students of all five HSC schools, as well as to other educational and healthcare institutions across Long Island.

Peter’s leisure time is spent enjoying family and friends, especially in outdoor activities. He hopes to finish visiting every National Park at some point in the next twenty years. His wife is also a PA, and all three of his children have received all or part of their college education at Stony Brook.
