Nadya Dimitrov DPM, RPA recently joined the faculty of the Department of PA Education as Assistant Director of the Post-Professional Masters Program. She is currently working as a Podiatrist in private practice and at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. She specializes in pediatric and adult podiatry, including chronic wounds and sports medicine.
Nadya’s first degree was a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Colorado in Boulder. It had three majors: philosophy, psychology, and art; but also included the standard pre-med courses. While doing volunteer work and working on the fringes of medicine, she also pursued her passions of painting, piano, and creative writing. In 1975 she graduated from the Stony Brook Physician Assistant program with a Bachelor of Science. She spent her entire professional career associated with New York City hospitals - pioneering as a surgical PA in both in-and-out-patient settings - including the first private HMO, which was affiliated with Lenox Hill Hospital.
While employed at the HMO, where she managed the surgical department, eight different specialists were her supervising physicians. When the HMO closed, she chose to continue her special interest in the foot and ankle, and enrolled in a medical school program at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. During her doctorate training, she continued to pursue a research topic related to the function of the gastrocnemius-soleus muscle group - having published an article in the PA Journal at the outset of that training. Other articles include digital nailbed capillary function in vascular conditions of the hands and feet. A second publication of an original research study investigated the use of a topical medication to treat fungal infections in high-risk patients without the use of surgery or parenteral medication.
Dr. Dimitrov has given multiple grand rounds and in-service teaching sessions for hospice and home care, diabetes teams, geriatric medicine and rehabilitation hospital staff teams at Beth Israel and Cabrini hospitals in New York, and at Long Island Jewish and Winthrop Hospital medical centers on Long Island. Her interest in teaching extends to the lay audience – where along with her husband, they educate junior and senior athletes at various levels of training. In her spare time, she enjoys teaching her Standard Schnauzers obedience skills, and continues to pursue painting and learning to play jazz piano.
