Professor Leiken received his
Bachelor’s Degree from Queens College in 1974. He majored in both economics
and mathematics. He then went on to Stony Brook University where he received
his Ph.D. in economics in 1978. Since that time he has been a full-time
faculty member in the Department of Health Care Policy and Management,
School of Health Technology & Management. Since 1994 he has been the Chair
of the Department and for 10 years, from 1994 — 2003, he was the School's
Associate Dean for Graduate Studies.
Dr. Leiken is the Co-Director of
the Advanced Certificate in Health Care Management, which he co-founded
with Professor Sexton of the College of Business. He teaches graduate
courses in Statistics and Health Economics. He supervises the practicum
projects and advises many of the graduate students specializing in health
care management.
He has published over 50 articles in referred journals, co-edited a book,
and written chapters in books on health care efficiency, technology assessment,
labor market analysis in health care and health policy. He has consulted
with many hospitals both locally and internationally on such issues as well
as with the Veterans Administration. He also consults on assessing economic
damages related to legal matters and performed many such analyses related
to the World Trade Center cases.
During his free time Alan plays golf and roots for the Mets, Giants, and
Rangers. He lives in Setauket with his wife Nancy. His oldest daughter Tracy
graduated from the University of Rhode Island in May 2005; his youngest
daughter Amy is a freshman in the Newhouse School at Syracuse University.
