#1: How can I get more information on the program? |
Answer:
We encourage you to visit us for an information session where you can learn about our program. These sessions will also provide the opportunity for you to review your goals with an advisor from the post-professional program faculty/staff.

#2: When is the deadline for applying to the program? |
Answer: Applications will be accepted prior to the start of the fall, spring and summer semesters with the following deadlines: Spring Semester: November 15; Summer Semester: April 1; and Fall Semester: June 1.

#3: Can I enroll in classes if I miss the deadline for application? |
Answer: Yes, you can apply as a non-matriculated student. You are permitted to register for a total of 12 credits as a non-matriculated student and a maximum of 6 credits per semester.

#4: Do I have to take the GREs to apply to the program? |
Answer: No, GREs are not required for admission.

#5: Can I transfer credits into the program? |
Answer:
You may request to transfer up to 6 graduate credits from an accredited university. Approval is determined after evaluation by the Program Director and the Assistant Dean for Academic and Student Affairs of the School of Health Technology and Management.

#6: Will my degree from a foreign university be accepted as a pre-requisite? |
Answer: It can be accepted if it is equivalent to a baccalaureate degree from a United States university. Students should contact World Education Services (WES) at www.wes.org to obtain a course by course evaluation of their foreign transcripts as well as their cumulative grade point average (both undergraduate and graduate coursework is taken into consideration in calculating a applicant’s GPA). Original transcripts must be received by WES and Stony Brook University.

#7: Can I receive graduate course credit for clinical or life experience as a PA? |
Answer: No, Stony Brook University does not award graduate level credit for clinical or life experience. The credits must be achieved through coursework.

#8: Can I apply if I do not have the preferred 3.0 cumulative GPA? |
Answer: Applicants who do not have the preferred 3.0 cumulative GPA can register for the post-professional program as non-matriculated students. After successful completion of six credits as a non-matriculated student, the post-professional program director and student will meet and discuss the option of acceptance to the program.

#9: What types of financial aid are available to part-time graduate students? |
Answer: Students must be matriculated into the program and take a minimum of 6 credits to apply for federal aid; otherwise they can apply for personal or alternative loans from a bank. Financial aid advisors in the Health Sciences Center Office of Student Services at 631-444-2111 are available to discuss these issues with prospective applicants.

#10: Is this program only for physician assistants who graduated from the entry level PA program at Stony Brook? |
Answer: No, any PAs who meet the admission requirements are encouraged to apply.

#11: Where are the classes held? |
Answer: Most classes are held on Level 2 or Level 3 of the Health Sciences Center (HSC), and some classes will be held in the PA Classroom---Room 125, Level 2 of the HSC. The HSC is located on the east side of the Stony Brook campus in close proximity to the Stony Brook University Medical Center.

#12: Do you offer any courses at the Stony Brook Manhattan campus? |
Answer: The Stony Brook Manhattan campus will become operational in Summer 2007, and it is expected that many of the courses currently offered at our primary campus will be phased in at the Stony Brook Manhattan campus.

#13: Will I be able to work while attending classes? |
Answer: The program is designed to accommodate the schedule of working PAs. Courses are offered in the evenings, on-line, and as a hybrid of these two teaching formats.

#14: Is this an on-line program? |
Answer: There are courses in the program that are offered online, but some of the coursework must be completed at the Stony Brook University campus. Each student will complete a different number of on-line courses, depending on elective courses that s/he selects.

#15: What degree will I receive at graduation? |
Answer: Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a Master of Science Degree – Physician Assistant.

#16: How will this degree help me? |
Answer: The program is specifically structured to enhance leadership capacity in the areas of clinical practice, administration, management, education, and research. Core and elective courses focus on the development of knowledge and skills that are most in demand by both PAs and their current or prospective employers. Optimizing patient care knowledge and skills is integral to the core curriculum. Finally, having a master’s degree has been noted by some PAs to increase their marketability in the work force. Of course, advisors are available to discuss other personal career goals with you as they pertain to the coursework that is offered.

#17: Do I need a computer to take on-line courses? |
Answer: Owning a computer is strongly recommended. If you do not own a computer, you must have daily access to one. In several core courses, students will be participating in on-line classes and responding to, and providing, e-mail correspondence several times each week.

#18: Do you have an employment placement service for graduates of the program? |
Answer:
The Department of PA Education maintains a listing of job opportunities for graduates (with weekly new listings) that is available to graduates from both our postgraduate and post-professional programs.

#19: How do I apply to the Advanced Certificate in Health Care Management Program? |
Answer: Answer: Applications are accepted once each year by the Department of Health Care Policy and Management. The online application is available at the following link http://www.uhmc.sunysb.edu/studserv/applyhsc.html. The deadline is February 15th each year. If you plan to apply to this program, you should work closely with your advisor on course selections. At least one course in the Advanced Certificate Program must be completed in the fall semester of the year that you are accepted into the program.
