After graduating from the Stony Brook Physical Therapy Program in 1984, Professor Cheri Gostic began her clinical career at Stony Brook University Hospital, focusing on cardiopulmonary physical therapy. Shortly thereafter, she was appointed Senior PT on the Cardiopulmonary service. She stayed for fourteen years, expanding her clinical service to both Outpatient Physical Therapy and Home Care settings. In 1991, she returned to the Stony Brook University Health Care Policy and Management program, earning a Masters degree in Health Sciences with a focus in administration and education.
Combining her interests in clinical practice, administration, and education, Cheri joined the Physical Therapy Faculty in 2000 as Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education. She became an American Physical Therapy Association Credentialed Trainer for the Clinical Instructor Credentialing Course in 2002 and continues to serve on the New York State Clinical Education Consortium.
In addition to her administrative role in the Clinical Education portion of the curriculum, Cheri teaches Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology I and II, a year long foundational course for first year entry level students. To enhance the geriatric content of the Clinical Medicine courses, Cheri completed the Long Island Geriatric Education Center Associate Program in 2003. Not stopping there, Cheri completed the transitional DPT degree from Stony Brook University in 2005. Cheri also co-teaches Case Studies II, the case-based integrative course following the first year of professional study in the entry-level program.
Dr. Gostic’s research interests include the impact of exercise and physical activity in weight management and functional improvement for seniors, and the challenges of rehabilitation for the obese geriatric patient.
