Research & Scholary Activities

Dr. Muratori received her BS from Fairfield University with a major in Biology, and a BA in Physical Therapy from Stony Brook University in 1992. In 2005 Dr. Muratori received a Doctorate in Education from the Department of Biobehavioral Science at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her doctoral work focused on the coordination of fine manipulation skills with postural adjustments in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Dr. Muratori has extensive clinical experience in the provision of physical therapy services in school and hospital-based facilities focusing on treatment of individuals with neurological deficits. She has held a variety of leadership positions in clinical settings and continues to provide evaluation and consulting services in the New York area. Currently, she teaches in the Entry-Level Doctorate in Physical Therapy Program of Stony Brook University in the areas of biomechanics and motor control. In addition, she participates in case study seminars and laboratory activities on an ad hoc basis.

Dr. Muratori’s research interests include hand motor control and reaching in individuals with PD and Huntington’s disease (HD), visual-motor coordination in HD and Multiple Sclerosis, and sensorimotor input for postural control in healthy individuals and individuals with movement disorders. In addition to completing several papers for publication, Dr. Muratori is currently working on studies examining gait training in individuals with lower limb amputations, the use of vision and light touch for standing balance in HD, and sensory perception for reaching movements in PD. She is also working with a local high school senior research class to mentor students considering science and research for future careers.

Away from her clinical and academic life, Dr. Muratori is an instructor for the Adaptive Sports Foundation, teaching individuals with various disabilities to ski, bike, canoe and engage in several other leisure activities. She trains close to 80 volunteers each year to work in adaptive sports. As the chairperson of a community outreach group, Dr. Muratori assists with programs for the homeless, elderly, and disadvantaged children throughout NYC. Farther from home, Dr. Muratori volunteers in several areas of the Dominican Republic, bringing rehabilitation equipment and providing training in areas with limited access to allied health services.
