Professor Johnson received a Bachelor of Science degree in respiratory therapy from Quinnipiac University, Hamden, CT, in 1983. She also received a New York State Advanced Certificate in Community Health and a Master of Science degree in Health Care Policy and Management in 2004 from Stony Brook University.
Professor Johnson worked briefly at Mid-Island Hospital, Stony Brook University Medical Center, and Long Island Jewish Medical Center from 1983 to 1984. Some of fondest memories of her early career were the mentorship she received from the seasoned therapists at these institutions. She returned to Stony Brook University Medical Center in the fall of 1984, where she worked as a staff therapist until 1993. Lisa has always had a strong passion for the neonatal/pediatric population, and in 1993, she accepted the position of Neonatal/Pediatric Coordinator at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Her neonatal/pediatric experience also offered her the opportunity to work as a Clinical Consultant for VIASYS Health Care.
Lisa is responsible for teaching HAT 432 Perinatal Respiratory Care and HAT 404 Neonatal Resuscitation. The Perinatal Respiratory Care course focuses on the anatomy, physiology, pathology and ventilator function related to neonatal/pediatric populations. Professor Johnson was instrumental in implementing the Neonatal Resuscitation course at Stony Brook, which was developed in accordance with the standards of both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association. As the Respiratory Care Program’s current Director of Clinical Education, Lisa is responsible for the scheduling, coordination, and oversight of the clinical rotations for the program.
She was secretary/treasurer from 1997-2001 and the president from 2002 – 2004 of the Stony Brook Chapter of the Lambda Beta Society, the national honor society for the profession of respiratory care. In 2005, she received the Faculty Honor Award in recognition of outstanding teaching from the students in the School of Health Technology and Management.
When away from the job, Lisa enjoys spending time with her family. She is also an avid gardener.
