Thomas Smalling earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Cardiorespiratory Sciences in 1988 and a Masters of Science degree in Health Sciences in 1992, both from Stony Brook University. He has worked in the profession since 1987 and joined the program faculty in 1995.

Professor Smalling has been involved in his professional association at the local, state, and national level. Tom served for a number of years on the Board of Directors, including the position of President, for both the New York State Society for Respiratory Care (NYSSRC) and the New York State Society for Respiratory Care Southeastern Chapter (NYSSRC-SEC). He currently holds the position of Senior Delegate from New York State to the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). Professor Smalling serves nationally as the Chair of the AARC Specialty Section in Sleep. He is also a board member on the Committee on Accreditation of Respiratory Care (CoARC). As the AARC representative on the CoARC committee, he works primarily on accreditation standards for polysomnography. Tom is also an editorial board member for RT Journal, ADVANCE for RCPs, and Sleep Review magazines. He has served on several committees on the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) and the Association for Polysomnographic Technologists (APT).

Professor Smalling is responsible for instructing HAT 304 Cardiopulmonary Physiology, HAT 333 Pulmonary Diagnostics, and HAT 493/494 Seminar Readings in Respiratory Care. Tom’s area of expertise is in pulmonary diagnostics and polysomnography testing, where he specializes in curriculum development, continuing education, and professional regulatory issues. Tom is a nationally-recognized speaker and author in the area of sleep technology and has played an important role in the development of a national curriculum. In 2005, Professor Smalling completed the accreditation process for Stony Brook that resulted in establishing the first CoARC-approved University-based respiratory care program in the nation to offer polysomnography.

In December of 2005, he was conferred a fellowship by the AARC in recognition for his significant and sustained contributions to the profession of respiratory care. Tom is currently completing his PhD at New York University.
