Professor Smith graduated in 1978 from Long Island University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Respiratory Therapy. Upon graduation, Stephen became a respiratory therapist at Queens Hospital Center in Jamaica, New York. In 1980, Stephen accepted a position as a respiratory care clinician at University Hospital at Stony Brook. In 1981, he was promoted to Assistant Director of Respiratory Care for Pediatrics and Neonatal. In 1983, Stephen completed his Masters in Public Administration with an emphasis in Health Care Administration from Long Island University.
Upon completion of his masters degree, Professor Smith was promoted to Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Health Technology and Management’s Respiratory Care Program. In 1984, he accepted a position at Long Island Jewish – Hillside Medical Center as the Director of Respiratory Care. Stephen became a partner and Vice President of Operations and Clinical Services at Anthony Home Health Care, Inc in 1985. He left the corporate world to return to clinical practice in 1995 as the Assistant Director of Respiratory Care at Southside Hospital. Stephen remained there until 2000, when he returned to Stony Brook University Hospital as the Associate Director of Respiratory Care for Education. In 2005, he accepted a full-time faculty position in the Respiratory Care Program at Stony Brook University. He is presently certified as an instructor for both the American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation and the American Heart Association Basic Life Support programs. Stephen recently completed his American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
Professor Smith was inducted into the National Honor Society for the Profession of Respiratory Care, the Lambda Beta Society. In 1993, his company was honored and awarded the NYSSRC-SEC Bruce Witz Award as the outstanding respiratory home health care company in the New York Metropolitan area. In 2002, Stephen was appointed by the New York State Education Department’s Board of Regents as a member of the Office of the Professions Respiratory Therapy Board. He was recently elected for a second term as Chairman of the Board. He has lectured at many conferences and has published articles in various medical journals.
Professor Smith’s primary teaching responsibilities revolve around the program’s cardiology courses. Stephen lectures on a variety of topics including hemodynamic monitoring, EKG interpretations, cardiac catherization, treatment of cardiac arrthymias, cardiac pathologies, and cardiac pharmacology. His primary objectives are to educate respiratory care students about cardiopulmonary care and to instill in future respiratory therapists a true understanding of the profession.
In his free time, Stephen coach’s basketball, routinely exercises, enjoys skiing with his family, and loves to read. He is an active member of his parish and participates on many parish/community committees.
