This is an advanced course for participants who are currently working in the sleep field. It is assumed that the participant is familiar with the basic aspects of polysomnography in regards to patient set-up, the 10-20 international system of electrode placement, basic artifact recognition, filter settings, sensitivities, and basic polysomnographic montages. Prior to taking this course, it is recommended that the participant take the introduction and advanced polysomnography courses.
This course covers:
- Techniques for placement of EEG (using the International 10/20 System of Electrode Placement) and non-EEG electrodes, and other ancillary equipment on pediatric patients.
- Procedures and methods for collecting, processing, and documenting information gathered from the sleep history, patient interview, and parents.
- Basic cardiac electrophysiology, electrode placement, measurements, and interpretation.
- Procedures for ensuring patient safety, infection control, medication side-effects, basic and advanced resuscitation procedures and emergency response protocols with pediatric studies.
- The criteria of sleep staging scoring according to American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards for pediatrics.
- Sleep/wake analysis results of respiratory, Periodic Limb Movements (PLM), and cardiac events.
- Calculations commonly utilized in evaluating sleep/wake data.
- The procedures for generating a sleep report using information gathered during the data acquisition phase of the sleep study.
- The components of the sleep report and the different types of sleep reports that can be generated.
- Supervised practice of pediatric sleep staging and calculations commonly utilized in evaluating sleep/wake data.
