| The physician assistant program has received approval from the State of New York to transition to a Master of Science degree program (M.S.) for the class which enters in June, 2005. The Stony Brook University Department of Physician Assistant Education also offers the school's Certificate of Professional Achievement for physician assistants.
The program's faculty/student
ratio of one instructor to ten students ensures optimal faculty/student
interaction with a strong focus on mentorship. Each student
is assigned a program faculty advisor who serves as a role
model and meets regularly with the student to provide academic
counseling, monitor progress, and encourage both clinical
and professional development. Each first year student is also
assigned a second-year student who acts as a peer mentor and
advisor.
This comprehensive two-year program provides
exceptional preclinical and clinical training.
Preclinical
Phase (first year)
This phase of the program offers students
extensive instruction in the basic, behavioral and clinical sciences.
Clinical Phase (second year)
This phase is accomplished through clinical
clerkships and preceptorships in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Faculty members
in the physician assistant
program at Stony Brook recognize the importance of active participation
in community organizations as an integral part of professional education.
Students are actively encouraged to participate in local, state, and national
physician assistant professional organizations and in community service
activities. The program is fully accredited by the Commission
on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs in cooperation
with the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician
Assistant and the New York State Department of Education. Graduates
are eligible to sit for the national certification examination administered
by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
Technical standards for each professional program are available upon request.
