TOPIC

DISCUSSION

ACTION

Minutes Review the minutes of the January 6, 2003 meeting. MOTION: Accept minutes as previously distributed. PASSED
Sub-Committee Reports
  1. R. Cameron (Director of Basic Science)- Roger Cameron didn't attend the meeting. Nothing was reported..
  2. J. Sorrento (Director of Clinical Courses)-
    • Each clerkship should have a plan in place by March on MCS will be integrated into the clerkship.
    • The national standard for passing a shelf exam is set at ~ 7%. Our cut off is 15%. Should the shelf exam be used to pass the clerkship? 30% of the students are out of sink and may not graduate on time. Our 15% standard may be too high.
    • The Clinical Course Director's meeting will discuss how they can add Neurology as a 3rd year clerkship.
  3. A. Jaffe (Evaluation)-Arnold Jaffe had nothing new to report.
  4. R. Barraco (Teaching/Learning Strategies)-Robert Barraco met with Peter Williams, Frederick M. Schiavone, & the CELT committee on January 31. The data and survey will come from cross campus. There is "0" cost to us. It will need to be accessed. Robert Barraco announced that there is another meeting this month.

J. Sorrento will report the results at the April CC meeting.

Review: Course Reviews
  1. Course Evaluation of Cardiovascular System (G. Mallis,Director)-
    M. Eisenberg, A. Viccellio- the Cardiovascular System was not evaluated today. No one from the course evaluation attended the Curriculum Committee meeting.
  2. Course Evaluation of Emergency Medicine Clerkship (S. Chale, Director)-D. Tompkins, N. Reich- This is a two-week mandatory course that is taken either in the 3rd or 4th year. 4th year students have the opinion to take either 2 weeks or 4 weeks. There are four hospitals offering Emergency Medicine. They are: Stony Brook Hospital, NUMC, Winthrop University Hospital, & St. Catherine of Sienna Hospital. The sites are selected using a lottery system. There are a fixed number of positions at each site.

    Course Evaluation:

    • The course is favorably received by the students.
    • The mean score responses to specific questions are all above average.
    • Dr. Chale visits the other three training sites & speaks with each of the faculty supervisors on a yearly bases.
    • Dr. Chale continually emails the faculty at all sites.
    • The clerkship was felt not to be long enough in the last review.
    • ourse evaluation are written comments that often identify a hospital, but global scoring for each site is difficult to determine.
    • Students continue to express their lack of independence in evaluating & treating patients. Dr. Chale feels that 3rd year students, particularly, don't have the knowledge base needed to function independently. Possibly, students taking the course in the fourth year may be able to function more independently.
    • There is no formal faculty development program that targets teaching of medical students in the emergency room. A program like this would enhance the educational content and quality of the experience for the students.
    • Dr. Chale has a difficult time obtaining the student evaluations from the other hospitals. The office staff should have contact with the faculty at the other hospital sites periodically & routinely to ensure timely submission of evaluations.
    • The written materials are recycled. This saves money, but the copies are written on & highlighted from previous students. Making new copies is time consuming to the office staff & costly. Dr. Chale doesn't like the textbook and won't use it for his students.

Changes:

  • The emergency room shifts were seven, each of 8 hours duration, totaling 56 hours. The clinical tile will be increasing in the future to seven shifts each of 12 hours duration totaling 84 hours.
  • The didactic lectures are being replaced with a self-study program.
  • Recommended that several clean copies of material assigned for reading be placed in the library on reserve for student access this would be helpful. Also, place the material on the web site.
  • Demonstration of mastery of the didactic material as evidenced by successful completion on an in-house exam will serve as a model for other clerkships.

Dr. Chale is an excellent Course Director. He continually communicates with all four sites by email and visits the sites annually.

Business
  1. Approval (or not) of two proposed Course Directors: M. Eisenberg for Pharmacology, Troy Dixon for Renal System
  2. Approval (or not) of proposed new elective in ENT (Proposal Attached)-The new elective is Otolaryngology and is part of the Department of Surgery. It will be offered from August through June. There will be only one student at a time for this one month elective. The Prerequisites for taking the elective is successfully completing Surgery and Medicine clerkships in the third year. The overall grades are Honors/Pass/Fail.
  3. Consideration of Suggestion by First-Year Medical Student M. Dorfman that Digital Videos of Lectures be placed on the web. Michael Dorfman spoke with Peter Williams, Fred Miller and Jack Stern before today's Curriculum Committee meeting.
Several points were discussed at the Curriculum Committee meeting of 02-03-03:
  • There was little enthusiasm for this if it was designed simply to supplement or replace the note service.
  • Most faculty felt it was not a wise expenditure of university resources, especially since PowerPoint versions of lectures coupled with notes seem to provide comparable value.
  • If students chose to run this entirely on their own, without cost to the school, you would have to get permission of each individual faculty person.
  • There was enthusiasm for two of this technology:
A-Clerkship lecturers often fail to show up. If their lectures were available on video, this problem would be obviated.
B-If replacing live lectures with video would allow use of the freed-up time for more active learning exercises, and if each lecturer could decide which lectures could be delivered electronically as opposed to live, then folks thought this idea might have considerable merit.

APPROVED: Moshe Eisenberg is approved as the new Course Director for Pharmacology.

APPROVED: Troy Dixon is approved as the new Course Director for Renal System.

APPROVED: The new elective in ENT (Otolaryngology) has PASSED.

ACTION: No decision was made. The committee was mixed and will continue to discuss digital videos at the March Curriculum Committee meeting.
