Course Evaluations

Neuroscience Yr I Course-Dr. Kritzer            Evaluators-Dr’s M. Maletic-Savatic &  J. Sprafkin

Dr. Williams thanked Dr. Maletic-Savatic and Dr. Sprafkin for their report, and opened the floor to the committee for any questions or comments.  The report indicated that the course is going well, that there have been a lot of changes, that attendance is excellent and that there hasn’t been a problem with the shortened the block of time.  The exam will be similar to previous years. There has been a positive reaction from the students to course directors, and Dr. Kritzer is planning to add additional questions to the course evaluation regarding the changes in timing.

1.Calendar Changes – 4th year from months to weeks

Dr. Williams reported that the fourth year calendar is going to be changed next year.  The 3rd year has traditionally been counted in weeks while the 4th year has been counted in months.  The 4th year will be converting from months to weeks so a month long course will now be 4 week course making a better fit in the elective periods in the 3rd year. Every 4th year course will list pre-requisites. This will be discussed at the Clinical Committee Meeting today and then brought back here to Curriculum Committee for decision.

Dr. Sorrento asked how this compares to other schools and whether it would adversely affect away electives. Dr. London said, when our students go to their sites they often change the dates anyway and reworking our schedule would not be likely to cause difficulty. She offered to investigate the issue.

Dr. Williams said a broader discussion of the fourth year would take place at the Faculty Retreat.

Dr Williams reported that few electives have ever been approved by this committee.  Dr. London annually solicits updates and changes the descriptions of these electives.

Dr. Schiavone described the process that the student uses for an elective.  Students complete and submit to OME a web based elective approval form. There is a list of hospitals with which we have affiliation agreements (required for away electives) and the student must also get approval from his or her Clinical Advisor.  Establishing an affiliation agreement can be a lengthy process.  The Elective Approval Form asks for course description, list of course objectives, what the students will be doing at that site and how they will be evaluated..  The URL for 4th Year forms is: http://www.uhmc.sunysb.edu/som/academics/Forms/index.html

2. Reviews of the first and second year to date

Dr, Williams had sent out the 1st and 2nd Year Reviews for 2003-04 and 2004-05.  Courses with which we had trouble with last year have improved markedly, Microbiology in particular.  Dr. Stern used the occasion to discuss what he considered the shortcoming of his evaluation system.  A committee member suggested he needs to allow more time before judging his evaluation system.  Dr. Stern said that next year he should make his quizzes available as formative exams with feedback and not part of the grade.

Dr. Steigbigel said with the exception of the few courses that were mentioned there is a remarkable consistency in the high and low scores among courses and this should be very useful to us to explore and see why high scores are consistent among some courses.  We should look in to this, possibly at the retreat.

3.  Revisiting the school Mission Statement

There was a brief discussion on Dr. Sedler comments on revisioning our curriculum (see handout).  Some felt the extant Mission Statement and Competencies already included Dr. Sedler’s suggestions.

4. Vision Principles/Structural Curricular Principles

Dr. Williams stated the rules that are mandated now were adopted and approved by the Curriculum Committee in the 90’s, e.g. that only 60% of every course be in lectures.  He also said that if there are concerns with any policies, they may be brought up to this Curriculum Committee for discussion.

The calendar changes were referred to the Clinical Directors Committee for input.
