- The place of subject exam results in Clerkship grades.
Dr. Tompkins stated we use a breakpoint of 15 th percentile for the NBME exams, which is higher than other institutions. He is concerned that our failure rate, and having the most retakes of exams, unduly disrupts student progress. Dr. Williams said the national standard is 7%. 10 years ago the Curriculum Committee decided to have a uniform policy and set the passing rate it at the 15 th percentile. There was much discussion on the pros and cons of keeping or lowering the 15 th percentile.
Dr. Williams submitted a motion asking the Committee to select among a number of options for use of the NBME exams:
- Motion: If there is a subject exam in a clerkship discipline, passing the exam is necessary to pass the clerkship. A student who fails a subject exam must re-take it and achieve a passing score.
- Motion: The minimum passing subject exam score should be:
| 7th percentile (current NBME level) |
5y |
| 10th percentile |
2y |
| 15 th percentile |
0 y |
- Motion: The course director may determine the role of a subject exam in assigning a course grade.
