Course Evaluations

Course Name                                                     Evaluators Names
 Pathology                                                           Dr’s. V. Vollmer & J. Lu
The floor was opened for discussion.  Dr. Vollmer stated that since the last evaluation 3 years ago the course changed to a block format. This is a well received course with positive feedback.  A mid-course evaluation will give the students an idea of what the expectations are before the final exam. Dr. Williams stated that the mid-course evaluation is mandated by LCME.  Dr. Fleit asked about student tutors.  Williams referred him to Dr. Chandran.  He also said as we increase the size of the class additional faculty will be needed.
Dr. Williams thanked the evaluators for their report.

Faculty Development

Old Business

  • Continuation of Nutrition Review from September Meeting – Dr. Richman

Comments previously made were the concern of the lack of integration with systems.  The group met with Dr. McNurlan.  A proposal was made to have Nutrition maintained as a course, but make changes

    • redesign the development of the course
    • have the level between Nutrition and Systems strengthened with active participation from both sides
    • change exam by having 2 to 3 questions on Nutrition in individual System courses.  Exam questions would be added up and counted as a single Nutrition Exam score
    • have the method of slides being used changed - more case based format
    • have presentation skills improved,  possibly by the Faculty Development workshops given by the Dean’s Office
For this to be successful, there needs to be full cooperation from the faculty.  This topic will be discussed at the 1st & 2nd Years CD’s Meeting

New Business

1. Ophthalmology for Medical Students – Dr. Miller

Dr. Miller reported his concern on Ophthalmology (Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, etc.) not being included in the systems course and having students graduate without these topics.  This issue was discussed 3 years ago and still has not been resolved.  Dr. Miller would like to formalize this somewhere in the curriculum.  Dr. Sibonie would be happy to complete any forms needed.  Some suggestions were made as to having this as part of a clerkship, i.e. Surgical Selectives have a CD ROM on this topic.  .
Dr. Williams suggested querying the Clerkship Directors as to what is being taught on Ophthalmology.
