1. Evaluation of the teaching blocks in year 1
This is the second year that the second half of 1st Year is teaching in a block format. Dr. Williams asked members what questions they would like answered in order to to make a decision as to whether to continue, eliminate or expand the block system. Questions that were raised were:
- Did NBME Subject Exam scores change?
- Did USMLE Step Exam scores change in these subject areas?
- Did students perform differently on the local exams & exercises?
- Is there a record kept of the attendance by the students? If so, did they change?
Drs. Cameron and Fleit said they preferred the block system. Dr. Williams ask Dr. Kritzer for her subjective view. Two significant items that will be discussed next meeting are (1) Whether integration better solution than blocks, and (2) if blocks are preferred, what do we do with Molecules, Genes & Cells and Anatomy, which is taught simultaneously.
Dennis Daniel (2nd Yr Student) reported that the 2nd Yr students were opposed to the OSCE being mandatory, as it cuts into their time studying for Step 1. Each student will be required to spend only four hours in this exam. The OSCE will supplant and be part of the ICM final exam. Students will have to pass this OSCE in order to go on to 3rd Yr. This is a school requirement and Dean Fine is firm about these tests being given. There will also be an OSCE’s at the end of the 1st Year.
2. 2006 Medical School Graduation Questionnaire – Preliminary
Dr. Williams asked that members look over the Program Evaluation Survey. Some Stony Brook answers were significantly different than national norms. | Dr. Williams will devise a list of questions, when received, and put a group together to obtain the answers.
2nd Year class will be sent a description of this event. Dennis Daniel will report back to the students
Members will review Evaluation Questionnaire and note what they think is important. This will be topic for discussion at next meeting.
