The grading for Systems course has been changed. There will be no letter grades for the individual systems, only for the overall performance. The grades for objective elements will be normalized consistently. We have instituted a policy to have questions from earlier segments incorporated into later components. The will apply to earlier 1st and 2nd year courses as well as System segments. Students will be made aware of this and this will be noted in the description of the course. |

Nutrition Dr’s. D. Bogenhagen & S. Morrison
Course Review was presented and discussion followed. There are 10 lecture hrs, spread through the whole year w/ 3 Instructors. Concern that lectures are taught with slides that are read or which are too complicated. Another important concern was to have coordination with Systems. Overlaps, repetitions - need to meet with Course Directors to rectify this. It was noted that Students that take Step 1 & 2 score about the same as other subjects. Changes in course are constantly being made. Dr. McNurlan asked for link in Cbase to other courses on the Nutrition topic. Suggestions made were: to have someone oversee the course to insure that all the components of Nutrition are included, whether it be basic science or clinical, which will allow the course to run smoothly - to have this course run as a Theme with a Theme Director instead of a Course Director. After much discussion it was decided to have this topic carried over to next meeting. A motion was made to have this discussion referred to a committee that will report at the next meeting in November.
Foundations in Medical Practice Dr’s. T. O’Riordan & I. Solomon
Course Review was presented and discussion followed This is a very large new course made up of 4 components which runs for a long duration. The question presented was should this course be a unified course or a federation of courses with one coordinator? This course is going to be very important for the next LCME visit. A retreat was held this past summer. The preliminary comments on the course were appreciated. This is a work in progress and will take some time. Ownership of components means ownership of topics, not of a discipline. Dr. Granek was applauded for her work. A motion was made to approve the Foundations course and re-appoint Dr. Granek as Course Director. |
Unanimously approved to carry this discussion to November 6th Meeting.
Unanimously approved the Foundations course and re-appointment of Dr. Granek as Course Director. |

A new Course Proposal for a Peru Research Elective in the 4th Year was presented by Dr. Pierce Gardner. This proposal seeks approval of this 4th Year, 3-month course of straight elective time. There will be 2 other faculty teaching that Dr. Gardner will coordinate. There will be one student a year that the Barry Collier Fund will support, or the student can pay his own way.
Note: There is usually a one-month research elective that the curriculum includes and occasionally 2 months are granted. The decision for longer extensions is made in Dr. Schiavone’s office.
Students Rep. Hugo Altamirano noted that the OSCE’s that were entered in the Cbase calendar, but not explained to the students. They would like to have more feedback and a heads up on this. |
Unanimously approved this new course proposal. |
