Family Medicine Residency Program

Residency Program: The Best of Both Worlds

The program recently celebrated its 20th Anniversary and remains the only residency program on Long island that is University/Medical School-based. As such we have a strong academic tradition and stress the importance of applying the latest evidence to caring for patients. Most of our rotations are based at Stony Brook University Medical Center which allows access to the state-of-the-art treatments and sub-specialist care. Our Family Medicine Inpatient Rotation forms the core of your hospital training and is taught exclusively by our Family Physician Faculty, bringing a humanistic approach to patient care along with the latest advances in medicine.

Our program is fully accredited by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and adheres to all institutional requirements.

Our faculty has a wide range of clinical and research experience and are there to help guide you through your three years of residency. We have over 12 full and part-time faculty including one faculty with CAQ’s in Geriatrics, several faculty doing Obstetrics and another with a special interest in Sports Medicine.

The Family Medicine Center is conveniently located within minutes of the hospital and has just launched an electronic medical record system. Our patient population provides you with the opportunity to learn about all the common problems that you will encounter in a real world setting that emphasizes preventive health care.  We have also just instituted a month long rotation in the Management of Health Systems which will give you the opportunity to become an expert in the “business” of medicine.

We also provide you with access to the best ways to keep your knowledge current with access to both UpToDate and Inforetriever, a searchable evidence-based database that gives you a portal to the latest information and helps you sort through the maze of medical knowledge available today.
Our academic program features weekly Grand Rounds,  a half day devoted exclusively to our Core Conferences, and the time and opportunity to do research, publish in the medical literature, or present at a local or regional conference during your three years at Stony Brook.

We strongly believe in the balance of your professional and personal lives and have incorporated a night float system to help you achieve that.  We provide many opportunities to minimize and cope with the normal stresses that occur during the course of your training, including an advising system, support groups, and regular meetings with the Program Director, along with informal residents social events.

Our graduates have been extremely successful and practice in all areas of the country, although a higher percentage do remain in the greater New York metropolitan area.  They have chosen positions in academics, at hospitals, in solo practices and group practices. They provide comprehensive care to their patients and many also maintain some affiliation with SUNY Stony Brook, both formally and informally.
