Stony Brook is located on Long Island's north shore, overlooking Long Island Sound. The
surrounding area is made up of quaint harbor towns, beaches, farmland and residential
communities. All the cultural and culinary pleasures of New York City are easily accessible
by car or rail. The area is ideal for water sports and boating. Fellows and faculty
have full access to the recreational and athletic facilities at the University, as well
as to the swimming, golf and tennis clubs at the VA.
Long Island offers a wide array of entertainment, diversions, and pastimes. From sandy ocean beaches
to wildlife preserves, from golf courses to auto racing to professional sports to amusement parks, there
is a tremendous array of outdoor activities. Restaurants, vineyards, farmstands, and orchards satisfy
the most demanding palates. And a vibrant arts community gives Long Island residents the chance to partake
in a variety of cultural offerings as well.
