Dr. Luft is a nationally and internationally renowned expert in the diagnosis and treatment of both toxoplasmosis and Lyme disease. His research into the molecular biological structure of antigens of Borrelia species (known to cause Lyme disease throughout the world) is for the purpose of developing sensitive and specific diagnostic tests, as well as the development of possible vaccine candidates. With regard to toxoplasmosis, Dr. Luft's laboratory has been testing new antibiotics in vitro and in vivo against Toxoplasma gondii, as well as studying the structure, function and relationship of Toxoplasma ribosomes. Dr. Luft's research is currently funded through the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control.
