Research Training

The Infectious Diseases fellow is actively involved in research projects. Research blocks over the two years of training will total no less than 4-6 months. Current areas of emphasis in the Division include:
  • Laboratory research into macrophage-HIV interactions;

  • The immunology and pathophysiology of Lyme disease and toxoplasmosis;

  • The mechanisms of microbial adherence to mucous membranes and vascular endothelium.

Clinical research opportunities are extensive and include:

  • Clinical epidemiology of nosocomial infections;

  • Clinical trials of investigational anti-virals, anti-fungals and anti-bacterials in both the AIDS population and the non-AIDS population;

  • Clinical epidemiology and management of Lyme disease.

Formal training in methods of epidemiology and biostatistics, and research methods, are components of the core curriculum for fellows at Stony Brook. Additional research opportunities are available through the Departments of Microbiology, Pathology, and Preventive Medicine on the University campus.
