Living on Long Island

Stony Brook is part of the Three Village Area on Long Island’s Northern shore. It is located 60 miles east of Manhattan and 5 minutes from the beaches of the Long Island Sound. Stony Brook has many recreational opportunities within the immediate area, including: hiking and/or biking trails, kayaking, golfing, sport fishing and sailing. For day excursions Eastern Long Island also offers access to 300 miles of beaches, the Long Island Vineyards, Fire Island, the Hamptons, as well as ferry connections to New England without the city traffic.

As the highest building in Suffolk County, Stony Brook Hospital commands some of the most impressive views of the area. The hospital sits on the 1,100 wooded acres of the university’s surrounding campus.

The University not only provides a beautiful setting to work in, but also brings arts and culture to the hospital’s doorstep. The University’s Staller Center for the Arts brings world-renowned performances to Stony Brook, as well as, local and regional art showcases. The Wang Center also provides a series on international events and performances showcasing Asian culture for the University. There are also a number of cinemas for independent film in the area, with the largest independent film festival held annually at Stony Brook.
