Message from the Chairman
It is an exciting time to become an orthopaedic surgeon. New technologies in Orthopaedic Surgery continue to improve our ability to treat patients,
educate our residents, and open new avenues in Orthopaedic research.
At Stony Brook, we aspire to meet the goals and challenges of our slogan – Smart Medicine, Expert Care. Stony Brook University Medical
Center is a strong and growing enterprise. We recently added an Ambulatory Surgery Center, Joint Replacement Center, and new inpatient Orthopaedic
Unit, and are currently enlarging our Spine Center. We have energetic, committed orthopaedic faculty with subspecialty training in all aspects
of orthopaedics. Our capacity to educate new surgeons has recently been advanced by adding to our curriculum a new Simulation Center at Stony
Brook. Simultaneously, the 300 million dollar modernization and renovation program for our medical center is well under way. The enlarged
Emergency Department is up and running. Our new outpatient Cancer and Imaging Centers are open and busy helping patients. Soon we will
have an additional ten state-of-the art operating rooms in the main hospital.
I am pleased you are interested in the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at Stony Brook University Medical Center. If you have any additional
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (631) 444-1487.
Sincerely,

Lawrence C. Hurst, MD

Message from the Program Director
Welcome to the Department of Orthopaedics at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Our institution and program have grown tremendously over
the past several years with an enormous capital project to expand the main hospital’s capability and accessibility. This influx of energy
and enthusiasm has a firm hold on our department with (since 2002) the addition of 5 fellowship trained full time faculty, a new inpatient floor, expanded
outpatient facilities, and state of the art ambulatory surgery pavilion.
Perhaps more importantly, I am proud to report on the success of our residents presenting research at the Academy (AAOS), Arthroscopy Association
(AANA), Hand Society, Trauma Association (OTA), EOA, and several other meetings. Furthermore, 2006 saw the publication of Stony Brook Orthopaedics
first in-house annual research journal.
It is an exciting time to be here, the “changes” are a product of growth, not turnover. You will find we have a great environment
that is stable, yet always improving.
I look forward to meeting you.
Sincerely,

James Penna, MD
Assistant Professor
Residency Program Director
