Orthopaedic Research Program:
Stony Brook Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program

The clinical and basic science research efforts are supported by the Ph.D. faculty within the Department of Orthopaedics, headed by Dr. Marie Badalamente, and within the Department of Biomedical Engineering, headed by Dr. Clinton Rubin.  Molecular, biologic, and biomechanical research topics are available to the resident.  In addition, for those residents interested in purely clinical research topics, Stony Brook University Medical Center is one of only 77 hospitals in the United States to have a General Clinical Research Center, which is funded by the NIH and affords the resident all the resources necessary to design and perform excellent clinical research.  Inpatient and outpatient space, nursing, laboratory, and statistical support are all available to the resident under the auspices of the General Clinical Research Center.

Our department has a full complement of clinical and laboratory facilities and resources.  In the Department of Orthopaedics, we have:

  • tissue preparation and ultramicrotomy room
  • a computer facility within our departmental library
  • microsurgery research and teaching laboratory
  • arthroscopy teaching stations and labs
  • Medical School Library
  • General Clinical Research Center (GCRC)
This facility can be used for clinical research studies and trials.  It is a dedicated NIH funded facility offering seed/startup funding, hospital space, nursing personnel, core laboratory facilities and statistical and computer support.  It is one of only 77 such facilities in the United States.
  • Department of Biomedical Engineering
The Department of Orthopaedics also has a good collaborative relationship with the Department of Biomedical Engineering.  This department matured within the Department of Orthopaedics and is now an independent department with biomedical engineering students at all levels.  Our faculty, residents and fellows have excellent relationships with the biomedical faculty and collaborations are easily arranged.
