Winthrop University Hospital

Winthrop University Hospital is a 591 bed tertiary care facility in central Nassau County.  As a Level I trauma center, it has a rich history in patient care, medical education, and research.  As the primary affiliate teaching hospital at Stony Brook University Medical Center, the institution currently hosts six orthopaedic resident positions.  Clinical, surgical, and didactic rotations provide the residents with experience in Adult Joint Reconstruction, Arthroscopy/Sports Medicine, Pediatric Orthopaedic/Spine Surgery, and Trauma.  Weekly educational conferences train the residents in the basic core competencies.  In addition, residents attend active monthly departmental meetings, including areas of M&M/Quality Assurance (CQI), CME lecture series, and resident Grand Rounds presentations.  Moreover, a new Orthopaedic Pathology Board Review Program, under the direction of Vincent Vigorita, MD and Winthrop’s Department of Pathology, has been initiated.  All subspecialty orthopaedic training is supervised by the department’s four full-time, Board certified, fellowship trained faculty as well as a host of voluntary part-time faculty members.
