The Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education ACME is the academic officer responsible for the operation of the School of Medicine's activities in CME. The purpose of these activities is to upgrade patient care and maintain and improve physician competency by offering quality learning experiences for physicians. These activities should permit physicians to fulfill CME requirements for relicensure, maintenance of certification and medical or specialty society membership. The Office of CME performs several functions:

  • Planning, implementing, evaluating and certifying for credit CME activities in conjunction with the faculty of the School of Medicine.
  • Sponsoring, co-sponsoring and jointly sponsoring CME activities including regularly scheduled conferences, courses and enduring materials. The methods of instruction utilized are varied to offer different types of learning experiences, appealing to diverse and individual learning styles and practice settings.
  • Assuring the scientific integrity and professional quality of the content of CME activities and the quality and appropriateness of the educational methods and materials.
  • Performing administrative and operational functions in connection with these activities to assure compliance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Essentials, including the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support.

The Office of CME (OCME) also has established relationships with community hospitals, specialty and other medical organizations, health departments and voluntary health agencies for the development and evaluation of jointly or co-sponsored CME activities. The OCME administrative operations include an Advisory Committee for CME with representation of all the clinical departments of the School of Medicine.
