Frederick M. Schiavone, MD, FACEP, is the Associate Dean for Medical Education.
In response to the ever-present improvements in educational technology, medical advances, and society's demographics, the curriculum and methodology of medical education continue to adapt. To remain current, the School of Medicine has been implementing a strategic restructuring. With Dr. Schiavone's appointment, the Office of Graduate Medical Education and Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs will now be merged into a new entity, the Office of Medical Education. The unification will foster new educational opportunities, allocate resources to create a mutually beneficial environment, and promote the School of Medicine's efforts in clinical education at all levels.

Dr. Schiavone is a Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Stony Brook University. He is currently the Residency Program Director and Director of Medical Education in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Associate Dean for Medical Education. Dr. Schiavone is a graduate of the University of Bologna and trained at the State University of New York at Downstate in Internal Medicine and in Emergency Medicine at Lincoln Medical Center. He is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Schiavone joined the faculty at Stony Brook in 1988 and concentrated his career on education and clinical excellence. He is the recipient of several faculty awards for excellence in teaching in the School of Medicine. He was awarded the National Emergency Medicine Residents Association Excellence in Teaching Award. He has been a course director in several courses in the medical school. Among other publications, he has authored a handbook for medical students and residents on the Pearls of Emergency Medicine. He has presented at educational forums on resident evaluation and women's health issues. He has also written chapters in several Emergency Medicine textbooks.

Dr. Schiavone has been a sought-after speaker who has been invited to national and international conferences on utilizing emergency medical services to recognize domestic violence, violence as a public health issue, and the social, legal, and ethical issues of emergency medicine. Additionally, Dr. Schiavone has been a national spokesperson for the prevention of domestic violence. His research interests are in family violence as a public health issue.
